Turning the Tables on Controlling Comments

Turning the Tables on Controlling Comments

Isn’t it annoying when you have a list of 5238 things to accomplish and you’re chugging along nicely, feeling proud of yourself for getting so much done, when someone steps in and tells you all the things you should be doing, many of which are already on your list?

Ultimately, I find that people who make comments of this sort are either 1. trying to control your time and resources, often through guilt-oriented manipulation; 2. trying to deflect attention from all the things that THEY need to do but can’t admit to themselves or others that they haven’t been properly motivated to get it done; or 3. both.

So I’ve found a way to turn the tables without getting so utterly defensive. Most people who try to make something my #1 priority have no idea that I have 4288 things ahead of whatever item they’d suddenly decided should be a life-or-death-magnitude decision.
