I’m feeling slightly better after spending some concentrated time visualizing in conjunction with my meds. Yes, I mix alternative medicine with classical.
Blame that on my back injury in 1995 and the neurologist who told me I’d have to live with it because hecouldn’t figure out the problem (that someone else fixed).
To deal with my back pain, I experimented with all kinds of alternative techniques while refusing to be a slave to pain medication—8 Ultrams a day for 48 days wasn’t cutting it. So because of my back injury, I learned all about self-hypnosis, massage therapy, visualization, acupressure, and lots of stuff that actually helped me relax my back muscles enough to sleep with my back flat on the bed.
I haven’t been using visualization so much with getting over my feud with my allergies this week, but Obi-Wan reminded me of it, suggesting the Seven Dwarfs help me out or some other animated characters that might be fun. I decided that I already had enough of Sleepy, Sneezy, Grumpy, and Dopey running around in my head, so instead, I went with Flora, Fauna, and Meriwether, the three fairies from Sleeping Beauty, to spin a little magick around my throat.
I remember reading many years ago about a study where cancer patients who used visualization fared better than those who didn’t during their treatments. It wasn’t a substitute for classical medical care, but at the very least, it helped with keeping a positive mindset.
Me, I just think it’s a matter of mind and body working together.
