Locational Astrology (Part 3): Travel, Timing, and the Places That Lit Me Up

Locational Astrology (Part 3): Travel, Timing, and the Places That Lit Me Up

Some places aren’t meant to hold your life.

They’re meant to wake something up.

When I look back at my favorite trips—the ones that stayed with me long after I unpacked—I notice a pattern very different from my past homes or my current one. These places didn’t ask me to settle or adapt. They intensified something briefly, clearly, and then let me go.

Travel, I’ve learned, is where astrocartography often speaks the loudest. They’re easier to feel because they’re temporary.

What Is Locational Astrology?

Locational astrology—often called astrocartography—maps your birth chart onto the Earth. Using your birth date, time, and place, it shows where specific planetary energies become emphasized depending on location.

These are angular activations: places where planets rise, culminate, set, or anchor at the base of the chart. Long-term residence can shape a life. Short-term travel, however, tends to concentrate the effect—revealing themes quickly, sometimes unmistakably.

How to Find Your Own Astrocartography Map

To explore this for yourself:

  1. Go to Astro.com
  2. Select Free Horoscopes
  3. Navigate to Locational Astrology
  4. Click AstroClick Travel
  5. Enter your birth date, time, and location
  6. Once the map loads:
    • Toggle the harmonious and disharmonious aspect buttons
    • Click on specific locations or lines to read interpretations
    • Zoom in on places you’ve traveled—or dream of visiting

That’s often enough to start connecting the dots.

Trips That Were Particularly Meaningful

Below are several destinations that stand out—not just emotionally, but astrologically. Each activated a different set of themes, and in every case, the experience was intense, memorable, and time-bound.

England (from London to Stonehenge)

Astrological emphasis:

  • Chiron on the Midheaven
  • Chiron trine/sextile the Ascendant

Accepted interpretation:
Chiron on the Midheaven is associated with a re-evaluation of success, purpose, and public identity. Time spent here often coincides with questioning inherited definitions of achievement and authority. Old ambitions may lose their meaning, prompting a deeper inquiry into vocation, calling, and authenticity. The influence can be unsettling but ultimately clarifying, particularly for those drawn to healing, psychology, or esoteric studies.

With Chiron also harmoniously connected to the Ascendant, this process is supported by acceptance from others. Individuality is not rejected but welcomed, and there is often encouragement to integrate personal insight into a broader contribution.

What actually happened for me:
I’ve visited London multiple times for work and usually managed to get a few days to sight-see.  London definitely gave my non-writing career a huge boost, and I found myself welcomed in ways that I never have been in my own backyard and given responsibilities and authority far above my pay grade. Whereas much of my acquisition career with the U.S. Government has meant swimming upstream to be innovative, my meetings in London always just accepted what I wanted to do and gave me permission.  Each time,  I briefed high-level officials in the United Kingdom who nodded and said yes to my wild ideas. I negotiated agreements between the two nations when back home, I needed multiple approvals of low-level bureaucrats for far smaller and less visible negotiations. After one of these trips, we wrapped up the deal at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C., and my engineer turned to me and said, “Can you believe it, Lorna?  Two people at our low level with unusual ideas, and the Brits let us write a binding agreement between the U.S. and U.K and everybody got what they wanted?” Even the things I accomplished in London at that age and level were far better accepted than the same kinds of ideas at the end of my career when I was a boss back home.

Ireland (Dublin / Howth / Western Ireland)

Astrological emphasis:

  • Uranus on the IC (Dublin/Howth)
  • Jupiter on the Midheaven (Cliffs of Moher)
  • Mars on the Midheaven (off the west coast)

Accepted interpretation:
Uranus on the IC challenges emotional foundations and inherited ideas of security. These locations tend to disrupt comfort zones, provoke restlessness, and loosen attachment to familiar definitions of home and family. They are rarely places to settle, but powerful places for awakening independence.

Jupiter on the Midheaven brings expansion, optimism, and a sense of possibility around purpose and direction. It supports big-picture thinking, faith in one’s path, and confidence in exploring new terrain.

Mars on the Midheaven adds intensity, drive, and confrontation with ambition and desire. Energy is high, motivation sharp, and personal will unmistakable.

What actually happened for me:
I loved my trip to Ireland with my daughters, and I’d love to go back! It turns out that my ancestors were Irish, and I loved everything about my visit, like it was in my bones..  I can’t gush enough about the Irish people or their historical sites.   Or their libraries.  Visiting some of the sites that were spiritually meaningful to me kicked off a new mindset and a return to writing novels instead of just non-fiction. During my visit, I conceived of and wrote most of a 100,000-word novel called The Lost Teachings of Dead Monks, and finished my first draft of two more novels  as soon as I got home. Since then, the visit has inspired several other stories set in Ireland. It’s been almost 10 years since my last visit, and Ireland still inspires me.

Spain (Galicia: Pontevedra to Santiago de Compostela)

Astrological emphasis:

  • Uranus on the IC (Pontevedra)
  • Jupiter on the Midheaven (Santiago)
  • Jupiter on the Ascendant (nearby)
  • Mars trine/sextile the Ascendant
  • Venus square the Ascendant

Accepted interpretation:
Uranus on the IC again highlights emotional liberation, independence from inherited roles, and a refusal to root too deeply. Jupiter’s strong presence brings enthusiasm, spiritual openness, and a sense of pilgrimage—especially fitting for Santiago de Compostela. Confidence, faith, and meaning are amplified.

Mars harmoniously linked to the Ascendant supports assertive but balanced self-expression, while Venus square the Ascendant introduces tension around pleasure, desire, and relationship expectations—often through indulgence or mismatched needs.

This combination is rich, contradictory, and vivid—excellent for short stays, less ideal for permanence.

What actually happened for me:
Until this exercise, I didn’t realize that my trips to Ireland and Spain shared the same astrocartography lines, as well as the Faroe Islands, another bucket list spot. I walked the Camino de Santiago for my 50th birthday with my older daughter for her college graduation.  The Camino itself tends to be a life-changing spiritual pilgrimage but the way that pilgrimage manifested for me certainly fits.  This trip really changed my mindset after Delta lost our luggage and we had nothing but what was on our backs to get through the trip.  We discovered   that we always had what we really needed as we hiked across Spain.

Case in point:  an unexpected menstrual cycle that started many kilometers’ hike from a store or pharmacy and in a country where we didn’t speak the language..  An older woman we’d just met said, “Hold on– I keep extra pads in my backpack in case my shoes get wet and I need them to dry out quickly.”

And yes, of course there’s a novel set in Spain, though it’s only in draft.

Quebec (Quebec City, Gaspé Peninsula)

Astrological emphasis:

  • Jupiter trine/sextile the Midheaven
  • Venus on the Ascendant
  • Moon trine/sextile the Ascendant

Accepted interpretation:
This is a notably supportive combination. Jupiter on the Midheaven enhances confidence, purpose, and optimism. Venus on the Ascendant brings ease, beauty, and social harmony, while the Moon’s harmonious connection fosters emotional belonging and intuitive connection with the environment.

These regions often feel welcoming, nourishing, and emotionally resonant—places where it’s easy to feel both inspired and at home.

What actually happened for me:
Another place I’ve visited more than once, for a negotiation with the Canadian government and for a family vacation via train.  I still smile at photos of me at Perce’ or the Chateau de Frontenac with the kids–I was the family photographer so there were very few pics of me with the kids, and these were special in so many ways.  My ex and I even got along great for MOST of these trips!  And as usual, one of these trips inspired an entire novel, in this case Access, my conspiracy thriller set in the late 90’s.

Mexico (Yucatan Peninsula)

Astrological emphasis:

  • Chiron on the Ascendant (exact)

Accepted interpretation:
Chiron on the Ascendant is deeply personal. It often brings identity-related insights through vulnerability, old wounds, or moments of self-recognition. While not always comfortable, it can be profoundly meaningful—especially in short, contained experiences where reflection and release are possible.

What actually happened for me:
One of my trips to Mexico was a Christmas week cruise.  That was a year when I was recently divorced and instead of other gifts, the girls and I pooled our “Christmas money” for an experiential gift  instead.  We spent  Christmas Eve and Christmas day climbing ruins and hiking, which was pretty much a perfect trip for us!

Travel, for me, has been about timing rather than permanence. These places didn’t ask me to stay. They showed me something—sometimes gently, sometimes abruptly—and then released me back into my life, changed.

In the final post of this series, I’ll turn my attention forward: to future homes, possible relocations, and how astrocartography can be used not as fate, but as informed choice.
