These were letters to complain about customer service, for example.  I’d come home incensed and spend the rest of the day upset, and much of it exorcising this demon by writing it out in the form of a hate letter.  Though I still write for catharsis and self-inquiry in personal and spiritual matters, in these cases, I now simply decide not to patronize that store again.  I don’t have to give them the benefit of knowing how badly they’re screwing up so that they can fix their problem…unless they want to pay me a consulting fee. I can, with a quiet heart, let them go out of business for their poor service….

Quick! Get your “Evil” Books Here!

I’m not sure whether to be appalled or amused by the news, but one of Spilled Candy’s long-running books is apparently a bad influence.  Here’s the message I received from author Kristin Madden:

“When Pagan Parenting first came out, the Fundie Christian Right compared me (and MTV) to Hannibal Lecter.  Now a new book entitled, Generation Hex: Understanding the Subtle Dangers of Wicca, includes me in a list of just how big those Wiccan numbers are growing.  They say that pagan homeschooling networks are growing and that many of them use resources like Pagan Homeschooling by Kristin Madden.  (Horrors!) They go on to tell readers that they should be concerned especially if they are parents, pastors, youth pastors, or will ever come in contact with young people. ”

I don’t normally complain about other people’s books on this blog but this Gen Hex book had me shaking my head when I checked it out.  One of my pet peeves is when people don’t seem to read the books they trash and I couldn’t tell that they read (or bought) either of Kristin’s parenting books.  I used to have this problem in the Baptist Church I grew up in where the pastor would tell us which movies not to see because they were evil.  He always seemed a little upset when I asked if he’d actually seen them to know first hand.  That seems to be the case with this anti-Kristin book.  There are so many facets of paganism and Wicca and, in their book, they take a very narrow approach.  Really makes me wonder how much research was done that they didn’t learn any more than they did…or perhaps they were looking for just enough “research” to justify their own preconceived ideas?

In any case, before you pass judgment on whether Kristin’s books are evil–this idea will make you laugh if you’ve ever met her–get your own copy.  Yep, go own an evil book, right now.
