Often when we’re faced with decisions that we don’t want to make  or decisions that aren’t clear, we ask for signs or look for them. “God, please if I’m supposed to do this, give me a sign and make it so clear  that  even I would understand it.” You know the mantra.   I used to ask for signs all the time, now I only ask when my intuition isn’t clear about something or when I’m so close to a subject that I just can’t be objective.

The Long-Awaited Honest-to-God Secret to Being Happy

That’s been happening with a particular project that I have not  been  able  to decide whether  I want  to pour more money and time into it, or do I stand firm and wait it out, or do I ditch the matter altogether. Honestly, I’ve been leaning towards ditching it, but I  was still open to other possibilities. I don’t have to make a decision immediately, so I would rather wholeheartedly ask for a sign to show me whether I should do it or ditch it.

My answer came in an unexpected  email from a person I don’t know. I didn’t even realize until I was halfway through the message that  this email was the sign I had wanted. My response  to the email,  which  was initially very positive, gave me the impression that I should hold firm.

It’s my sign, I thought. I’m supposed to be doing this. I’ll keep it up.

And then I got to the PS.

It was incredibly negative and a huge backhanded slap that made me suck in my breath and realize that not only should I not only pour any more money into this project, but I never should have gone this route to begin with.

I had my sign all right. The person who sent the email did not intend  the results that are going to happen, but when someone is looking for a sign, it can come from a very strange place, even the most innocent.

That sign  is often  usually the  proverbial  last straw. Admittedly I would have preferred a gentler sign.

Several years ago, my friend Audrea reported seeing a big, lighted marquee outside a church on a lonely country road.

The marquee said, “If you’re looking for a sign, this is it.”
